Pocket Carry pings for help at 12 minutes, Eco player sits on 3k gold, Military player overextends into a flank collapse—Season 13 team games still end before Imperial because nobody funded the raid. With variant civs from Dynasties of the East and Yue Fei’s Legacy, AoE4 roles are sharper than ever: Carry, Economy, Military, Support. This guide treats the Carry as the finisher, but only if the team banks tribute, secures trade, and buys the Imperial timing window.

The Carry Player: Pocket Position, Imperial Timing, and Siege Payoff

Pocket Carry avoids early fights, secures gold/stone, and aims for Imperial power spike. In 2026 meta, Ottomans with Great Bombards and Janissary screen, Knights Templar Imperial cavalry, and Sengoku Daimyo late infantry scaling are premier picks. Victory comes from breaking fortified positions, trading efficiently with gold-heavy comps, and ending stalemates with siege superiority. If the pocket dies before Imperial, the team loses its finisher.

Pocket Carry with Great Bombards sieging fortified enemy base

Before the first bombard rolls, map control matters. A Carry should not take fair Feudal fights; instead, wall choke points, drop a defensive TC if pressured, and preserve Great Bombards for the enemy's stone wall or keep. When the Military flank forces enemy units home, the Carry can push a vulnerable landmark. That timing is the role's real payoff.

The Economy Player: 3-TC Booms, Tribute, and Trade Security

Economy player is the engine: multi-TC or trade boom to bankroll ally age-ups and military losses. Abbasid Dynasty remains standard for 3-TC booming, Malians use Pit Mine and Cattle Ranching for passive food/gold leads, and Jin Dynasty gained mid-game scaling in Patch 16.2 via unique district bonuses. Tribute decisions are binary: fund the Military's Feudal all-in, or send gold to the Carry for a faster Imperial.

Can the Eco player ignore trade security? No: if a Mongol Keshik pack snipes traders, the Carry's gold-heavy comp starves. Route trade behind walls, add outposts, and keep a scout on the line. In high-level play, the Eco player also manages relics with Support, turning map control into perpetual gold.

The Military/Aggressor Player: Flank Pressure and Tempo Control

Flank player creates space by raiding gold/wood lines, forcing enemy defense instead of attacking your Carry. Mongols use Keshiks and tower rushes, English Longbowmen with reworked House of Lancaster manors stage defensively, and Vikings are expected top-tier early aggression on October 29, 2026. Win condition: dictate pace, force defensive spending, and prevent enemy booms from reaching Imperial safely. Whether the squad plays on age of empires 4 pc or console crossplay, role clarity prevents four greedy pocket civs from colliding. Before launch, check the Age of Empires IV official website for Raiders of the North pre-order details, Vikings/Scots info, and Season 13 patch notes.

The Support Player: Force Multiplier, Relics, and Sacred Site Control

What does Support actually do after Feudal? Buffs, heals, and vision make ally armies punch 20–30% above their weight. HRE Prelates and Relic Inspiration boost economies and combat; Delhi Sultanate provides free tech and Sacred Sites for team-wide gold; Ayyubids use House of Wisdom flexible buffs. Utility wins: Warrior Monk heals, Mongol Falcon intel, and relic/sacred-site mini-game control often decide close team fights. Ignore Sacred Sites and the team's gold income dies before Imperial.

Drafting Role Synergy and Getting Ready for Raiders of the North

Draft with one job per player: Carry breaks base, Eco funds losses, Military creates space, Support enhances efficiency. Four players all drafting greedy pocket civs means no Feudal pressure, no tribute, and no relic control.

Role Primary Objective Key Unit/Tech Victory Contribution
Carry Imperial transition Great Bombard / Elite Knights Breaks enemy base late
Economy Resource scaling Trade boom / 3-TC boom Funds losses and age-ups
Military Early pressure Keshik / Longbow / Ghazi Raider Creates space, stops enemy booms
Support Buffing & utility Warrior Monk / Relics / Inspiration Enhances army efficiency, map control

Crossplay since October 2025 lets PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5 squads queue together, but role labels matter more than platform. Verify Raiders of the North details and Patch 16.2.10475 before October 29, 2026.
